Abstract

Description

Mosaic art at the Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe (or Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, or Saint Apollinaris in Classe), which is located in Ravenna, Italy. The photo shows two winged symbols just to the left of the apse mosaic in the triumphal arch of Jesus Christ. These are John (the eagle) and Matthew (the man), two of the four Evangelists. Below the Evangelist symbols are four of the twelve sheep (six per side) that advance symmetrically toward the summit of Christ. Multicolored clouds surround the Evangelists and the sheep.
