View of Mount Vesuvius (Monte Vesuvio) across the Bay of Marina Piccola, which is on Capri's southern coast (Italy). Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples. It is the only volcano in Europe that has erupted within the last century. Its eruption in 79 A.D. destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and also the Villa Damecuta on Capri. The foreground of the photograph shows typical vegetation on Capri. According to capri.com: "The flora of the Island of Capri is comprised predominantly of Mediterranean shrubs. The shrubs and trees on the island tend to have small leaves with a thick waxy layer, which reduces to a minimum the loss of water during the hottest hours of the day and protects the plant from drought and from the sun's rays."
