Capri

Permanent URI for this collection

The Italian Island of Capri is located in the Bay of Naples and was a favorite home of Emperors Augustus and Tiberius in the early days of the Empire. Tiberius, in particular, spent several years living on the Capri. The remains of several imperial villas dot the island. The photos in this collection focus primarily on Villa Damecuta. It is a large complex which may have extended to the Bay to include the Grotta Azurra, or Blue Grotto. Villa Damecuta was built by Emperor Tiberius. He was the ruling emperor at the time of the Trial of Jesus, which took place across the Mediterranean in the province of Judea. The Villa was perhaps damaged by heavy dust from the eruption of Vesuvius (79 CE). Photos in this collection were taken by Dr. Beth M. Sheppard in May, 2017 and cataloging was completed by Shelley Rogers.
