Description

Mount Vesuvius (Monte Vesuvio) as seen from the window of the ferry that runs from Naples, Italy to the island of Capri. Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples. It is the only volcano in Europe that has erupted within the last century. Its eruption in 79 A.D. destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum.
