View of Mount Vesuvius (Monte Vesuvio) across the Bay of Marina Piccola, which is on Capri's southern coast (Italy). Mount Vesuvius is a stratovolcano on the Gulf of Naples. It is the only volcano in Europe that has erupted within the last century. Its eruption in 79 A.D. destroyed the Roman cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, and also the Villa Damecuta on Capri.
