Abstract
Description
The lower left portion of the apsidal conch in the Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe (or Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, or Saint Apollinaris in Classe), which is located in Ravenna, Italy. Five of the sheep mosaics representing the twelve Apostles are pictured in a green meadow, which expresses the joy of nature for the salvation of Jesus Christ. Flowers such as lilies and daisies are pictured, along with olive, cypress, and pine trees, birds, and rocks. The lower half of the photo shows the Emperor Constantine IV Pogonatus group on the left and a Bishop of Ravenna to the right, between the two windows. The apse has representations of four bishops: Ursicinus, Ursus, Severus, and Ecclesius in sacred vestments and holding books, indicating the presence of the word of Christ. These four bishops founded the main basilicas of Ravenna.
