Description
This image is of the exterior of the tomb of Dante Alighieri in Ravenna, Italy. The mausoleum is surrounded by the "Zona Dantesca," which translates to "Dante's Area," and serves as a zone of silence around the tomb of the great poet. This tomb was commissioned in 1780 by Cardinal legate Luigi Valenti Gonzaga. The architect was Camillo Morigia. The tomb is in neoclassical style. The building is known locally as la zucarira, or the sugar bowl. The Latin inscription at the entrance reads, "Dantis Poetae Sepulcrum", which translates to "Tomb of the Poet Dante".
