Ravenna: Tomb of Dante Alighieri
Permanent URI for this collection
The poet, Dante, died in 1321. His remains were initially placed in a scarcophaus. In 1780 the present mausoleum was comissioned by Cardinal Legate Luigi Valenti Gonzaga with Camillo Marigia, of Ravenna, serving as the architect. The building is in neo-classical style and, with the shape of its dome, known locally as the "sugar bowl" (la zucarira).
