Abstract

Multiple photos are associated with this record. Please click the links to view all of the items in the series. These photos were taken in the Hall of Constantine (Sala di Costantino) within the Raphael Rooms, which is part of the Vatican Museums. These are public museums that display about 20,000 of 70K works collected by the Catholic Church and the papacy throughout the centuries. The museums were founded by Pope Julius II in the early 16th century. Only the Louvre in France receives more annual visitors than the Vatican Museums. The museums consist of 24 galleries, with the Sistine Chapel being the last room visited. The Hall of Constantine is one of four "Raphael Rooms." These photos show the "Donation of Constantine" (also known as "Donation of Rome"), which is the fourth wall painting in the sequence of four in this room. This fresco was painted by Raphael's pupils from drawings by the master. It depicts Constantine handing the pope, who is enthroned under the red baldachino, a gold statuette as a symbol of Rome. The architecture of the scene is that of Old St. Peter's Basilica, which was destroyed in the 16th century. Citizens of Rome are depicted in the fresco observing the proceedings.
