Abstract
Description
View of grassy field, pedestrian sidewalk, and roadway approaching the Basilica of St. Apollinare in Classe (or Basilica of Sant'Apollinare in Classe, or Saint Apollinaris in Classe). Built in the 6th century five kilometers outside Ravenna, Italy, in the Classe portion of Ravenna, this massive paleo-Christian basilica was commissioned by the Bishop Ursino. The basilica is the building on the right (closest to the road) with a bell tower. The basilica is an important monument of Byzantine art and is well known for its mosaic decorations, as well as housing the relics of Saint Apollinaris.
