Abstract

This paper for my history class examines the lasting impact of British imperialism in India, highlighting its economic, political, and social consequences. It discusses how British rule led to economic exploitation, including the destruction of local industries and wealth extraction, as well as policies that contributed to devastating famines. Politically, the British used a “divide and rule” strategy that deepened religious and social divisions, ultimately leading to the violent Partition of India.

Description

Studying British imperialism in India deepened my understanding of how colonialism shaped economic, political, and social structures, reinforcing critical thinking about historical injustices and their lasting effects. Analyzing events like the Bengal Famine and Partition revealed the complexities of power and resistance, making history feel more relevant beyond academics. This topic also connects to my leisure interests, as it made me more aware of how colonialism is portrayed in media and literature, influencing how I engage with historical narratives outside the classroom.
