The only gate in the eastern side of the old city wall is sealed. IT is known variously as the Golden Gate or Mercy Gate. Although exact dating is unknown the present gate perhaps stands where a gate existed at the time of Josephus. It is often thought that the current gate dates from either the late Byzantine period of the Umayyad period. It has been walled in several times, the latest by Suleiman the Magnificent. The other side of the gate is the location of the HErodian Temple Mount.
