Abstract

Description

In the lower register of the ceiling's mosaic of the Battistero degli Ariani (Arian Baptistery; Arian Baptistry), below and upside down from the central medallion, Saints Paul and Peter are depicted on either side of a jewelled cross with a garment draped over it, positioned on a throne. This is known as the hetoimasia and is probably a reference to Christ's second coming. Paul (on the left) holds a scroll, whereas Peter (on the right) holds keys. A portion of Andreas, the apostle behind Peter, is visible in the photo.
