Abstract

Description

The drum lunettes are located between the central vault and the four barrel vaults in the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia (Galla Placidia Mausoleum; Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) in Ravenna, Italy. Each drum lunette contains two men flanking an alabaster window. These eight men are thought to be eight of the twelve apostles. Each holds their right arm up in acclaim. One man holds a scroll in his left hand, while the other has his left hand tucked into his pallium. At the bottom of the lunette, two doves represent spirits in search of eternal peace who are attempting to quench their thirst at the salvation fountain.
