Abstract
Description
The Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (Basilica Papale di San Paolo fuori le Mura) is one of four major papal basilicas in Rome. It was built over the burial place of Paul of Tarsus and consecrated in the 4th century CE. The church was renovated numerous times over subsequent centuries. When it burned down in 1823 it was restored as closely as possible to the original and its later additions. The building is one of the largest covered archaeological areas in Rome at over 1000 square meters. The photograph was taken at the northwest corner of the building, where coaches are permitted to park for two hours. The portico, partially visible on the far right, was rebuilt in 1928 with 150 columns. For a more detailed history of the basilica, https://www.vatican.va/various/basiliche/san_paolo/en/basilica/storia.htm is a good resource.
