Abstract

Description

A view of the upper portion (drum) of the southern lunette in the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia (Galla Placidia Mausoleum; Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) in Ravenna, Italy. This mosaic depicts Mark on the left and Luke on the right, with both Evangelists raising their right arms in acclaim to Christ. The window between the Evangelists is made of thinly sliced alabaster stone, instead of glass, which allows a golden glow to emanate from the window. At the bottom of the lunette, two doves represent spirits in search of eternal peace who are attempting to quench their thirst at the salvation fountain.
