Abstract

Description

Mosaic of the port city of Classe, as seen in the Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo) in Ravenna, Italy. Above the walls, buildings--some with circular plans--and porticoes are depicted. At the bottom of the photo, circular portraits are visible in the extradoses of the arches. In the upper portion of the photo, the second tier of mosaic decorations are partially visible. These are large depictions of saints or prophets, separated by clerestory windows, and separated from the first tier by a Greek fretwork border.
