Abstract

Description

Partial image of the central mosaic in the left lunette of the Presbytery, Basilica San Vitale (Basilica of St. Vitale; Church of Saint Vitale) in Ravenna, Italy. The featured mosaic contains two episodes from the life of Abraham. The photo shows part of the left episode, in which Abraham receives word from three angels that Sarah will give birth to a son, Isaac. Abraham is the partial figure on the lower right of the photo. Sarah appears next to him, smiling and with her right index finger to her mouth, indicating her surprise at the news that she will give birth to a son, despite her advanced age. In the upper left of the photo, the Prophet Jeremiah appears on the left support of the arch.
