Abstract
Description
The Basilica of San Vitale (Basilica of St. Vitale; Church of Saint Vitale) in Ravenna, Italy. The church was built in the 6th century and is one of the most important surviving examples of Byzantine architecture and mosaics. The Basilica's structure is uncommon among Western Christian churches, with a central plant surmounted by an octagonal dome. Many round sloping and squared buildings were constructed off the side of the apse. The bricks are typical of the Justinian age: 4 cm. high, affixed with lime of the same thickness.
