Abstract

Description

The ceiling mosaic on each of the barrel vaults in the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia (Galla Placidia Mausoleum; Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) in Ravenna, Italy. In the bottom of the photo appears a partial view of the southern lunette supporting the dome in which a mosaic of Mark the Evangelist appears, raising his right arm in acclaim to Christ. Most of the photo shows the mosaic of the barrel vaults, with circular decorations that represent the white corollas of moonflowers against a deep blue sky. The mosaics of the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia are the oldest and most complete in Ravenna.
