Abstract

Description

Triumphal Arch Mosaics in the Basilica San Vitale (Basilica of St. Vitale; Church of Saint Vitale) in Ravenna, Italy. A total of fifteen mosaic medallions line the intrados of the arch to the Presbytery, depicting Jesus Christ, the twelve Apostles, and Saint Gervasius and Saint Protasius, who were the sons of Saint Vitale. Ten medallions, including that of Jesus (at the top of the arch), are pictured in the photograph. Green intertwined dolphins, which represent salvation, appear under each medallion. Gold fascia with twining flowers, birds, and horns of plenty surround the medallions.
