Abstract

Description

Interior view directly below the domed ceiling of the Battistero degli Ariani (Arian Baptistery; Arian Baptistry). The mosaic decoration features John the Baptist as he baptizes Christ in the Jordan River; the Holy Spirit appears as a dove and the River Jordan as an old man with red horns, wearing a long green loincloth. The outermost mosaic register showcases the empty throne of the Ethymasia, symbolizing the second coming of Christ. It includes a jeweled cross resting on a purple cushion and a representation of the twelve apostles. The lower right of the photo shows a small part of one of the arched, mullioned windows of the baptistery.
