Abstract

Description

Interior view of the Battistero degli Ariani (Arian Baptistery; Arian Baptistry). It is sparsely adorned, with exposed brickwork and no remaining furnishings. The lower portion of the photo shows the arched entrances to side apses; arched, mullioned windows provide light above. The upper portion of the photo shows the outermost part of the mosaic decoration of the domed ceiling, which is the highlight of the Arian Baptistery. This mosaic register showcases the empty throne of the Ethymasia, symbolizing the second coming of Christ. The photo shows a jeweled cross resting on a purple cushion (upper left) and a representation of five of the twelve apostles.
