Abstract

Description

Latin inscription within a marble floor tile at the Abbey of the Three Fountains (Rome, Italy). It says "Sepulchrum Prelatorum Cisterciensium," which means "The tomb of the Cistercian prelates." The Cistercians are known for their strict adherence to the Rule of St. Benedict, which involves a life of manual labor, solitude, and frequent prayer. "Prelates" are ecclesiastics, such as bishops or abbots, of superior rank; hence, the inscription commemorates the place where leading Cistercian monks and nuns are buried.
