Abstract

Description

The central dome ceiling mosaic in the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia (Galla Placidia Mausoleum; Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) in Ravenna, Italy. Some 800 gold stars in concentric circles surround a central golden cross. The symbols of the four Evangelists appear in the four corners. Three of the four drum lunettes below the central dome are partially visible in the photograph. The apostles in the left (east) mosaic are the only ones that have been clearly identified; they are of Paul (dark hair and beard) and Peter (white hair and holding a key in his left hand).
