Abstract

Description

One of the three shrines within the interior of the Church of St. Paul at the Three Fountains (Rome, Italy), seen within its rich context in the church. Each shrine, within a marble niche, has a bronze depiction of a severed head, indicating where Saint Paul's head touched the ground and a spring allegedly bubbled up. Each fountain is equidistant from the others, but on different levels, as Saint Paul's head bounced downward. Above each fountain is a tabernacle designed by della Porta, and each is flanked by black marble columns.
