Abstract
Description
Large rose-colored limestone columns date from the Justinian church. In this photo, five holes have been worn into the column in the shape of the cross. It is a popular pilgrimage stop to view this damage. The rest of the column is encased in wooden boards during conservation. Pilgrims have added their names to the temporary wooden protection materials. The columns had become very dark in color through damage by smoke and moisture.
