Abstract
Description
Stucco in the Baptistery of the Orthodox (Neonian Baptistery; Baptistery of Neon; Battistero Neoniano; Orthodox Baptistery; Battistero Ortodosso; Baptistry of the Cathedral). Stucco is an artistic technique in which gypsum and lime are mixed together and used to form a relief decoration on a wall surface. The stuccos appear in the upper arcade of the Baptistery, depicting the sixteen prophets of the Bible. The photograph shows one of the small lunettes above the aedicules. According to https://www.ravennamosaici.it/en/the-stuccoes-of-the-neonian-baptistery/: "Some of these lunettes also describe some significant episodes extrapolated from the Bible which serve as exemplary themes for the catechumens who are approaching the sacrament of baptism....in the second three-light window, above the lunette above the second prophet, the Traditio Legis ["Tradition of the Law"] is represented: the delivery of the Word of God to the apostles. Christ on the throne gives Saint Peter the cross, symbol of authority and martyrdom; while Saint Paul is invested with the evangelizing mission for all humanity."
