Abstract

Description

A view of the lower portion of the southern lunette in the Mausoleo di Galla Placidia (Galla Placidia Mausoleum; Mausoleum of Galla Placidia) in Ravenna, Italy. It depicts a male saint carrying a cross and running toward a burning gridiron and an opened cabinet containing the four canonical Gospels, which are identified by the names of the Four Evangelists in Latin. Gillian Mackie, an art historian, has argued that this panel represents the Spanish Saint Vincent of Saragossa, rather than the Italian Saint Lawrence. The window in the center is made of thinly sliced alabaster stone, instead of glass, which allows a golden glow to emanate from the window. The photo also shows the moonflower mosaics on the ceiling.
