Description
The south wall of the nave, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo) in Ravenna, Italy. A partial view of mosaic that depicts the palace of King Theodoric appears on the bottom right of the photograph. A line of male saints is shown to its left; they are progressing toward the apse of the church. Like the female saints on the north wall, the male figures are haloed and carry crowns. Above this frieze, among the clerestory windows, is the second tier of mosaic decorations. This band features male saints (or prophets), each holding a scroll or a book. Above the male figures are 13 panels relating to Christ's Passion and Resurrection.
