dc.description | The Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo) in Ravenna, Italy is famous for its Byzantine mosaic art; however, there is art from other time periods. The apse of the church collapsed in an earthquake in the 8th century and the present apse was constructed in the 16th century and decorated in the Baroque style. Artwork in side chapels off the north aisle of the church are also indicative of Baroque and other time periods. The painting in this side chapel looks to be representative of the Italian Renaissance, featuring the Madonna and Child with classical architecture references. The figure to the right of the infant Jesus could be John the Baptist. According to an image on Flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/escriteur/29372419696/, the painting is in a side chapel dedicated to St. Francis. | |
