Abstract
Description
The south wall of the nave, Basilica of Sant'Apollinare Nuovo (Basilica di Sant'Apollinare Nuovo) in Ravenna, Italy. A line of male saints is shown in the central portion of the photograph. They are progressing toward the apse of the church. Although not shown in the photograph, they are led by St. Martin, to whom the Church was rededicated after the Ostrogoths were vanquished; St. Martin opposed Arianism. Like the female saints on the north wall, the male figures are haloed and carry crowns. Above this frieze, among the clerestory windows, is the second tier of mosaic decorations. This band features male saints (or prophets), each holding a scroll or a book. Above the male figures are 13 panels relating to Christ's Passion and Resurrection.
