Abstract

Description

The Cloister (Chiostro) at the Papal Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls (Rome, Italy). It was erected between 1220 and 1241 and is one of the few parts of the Basilica which survived the fire of 1823. Two monastic communities previously existed near the church: a monastery for men and a cloister for women, which were later united in a single monastery that formed St. Pauls Abbey, managed by the Benedictine Monks. The interior of the cloister is surrounded by four galleries divided by a series of four small double columns. These support rounded arches, surmounted by a cornice ornamented with mosaics. Renovations were obviously occurring when this photograph was taken.
