Jerusalem: Temple Mount

Permanent URI for this collection

The Temple Mount, in the heart of Jerusalem, is the site upon which the Second Temple, the one built by Herod the Great, stood. The Temple Mount is a holy site for three faiths. For Judaism, it is the site of Mount Moriah where Abraham was willing to sacrifice Isaac, a sacrifice for which God substituted a lamb. That event is known in Hebrew as the Akedah. For those of the Islamic faith the site now occupied by the Dome of the Rock is a place related to Mohammed traveling on his Night Journey. For Christians the site is important because Jesus was known to preach in Herod's Temple. Metadata for this collection was created by Benjamin Desjardin, Graduate Student Project Intern. Photos were taken by Dr. Beth M. Sheppard in 2016 and 2023.
